Our mission is to empower seniors with ideomotor apraxia to maintain their independence, dignity, and autonomy through evidence-based supplementary aids.

Around 90% of individuals with dementia experience ideomotor apraxia, which makes completing the activities of daily living nearly impossible.

They know what they want to do. And they remember how. But what they struggle with is in between: the connection between thoughts and action.
— Sam Vadivelu, Founder and CEO

Why does ShoesOverSocks exist?

I founded this organization because seniors with dressing apraxia deserve support that preserves both dignity and independence. After seeing a senior at a local care facility wearing his underwear over his pants, it was clear that he recognized something was wrong but couldn’t identify what.

Rather than simply resolving the issue for seniors, we can empower them to navigate challenges themselves, with appropriate guidance. We focus on empowerment through resources (step-by-step support, verbal guidance, and tangible cues) to help seniors maintain their autonomy, and prevent withdrawal.

Ready to make a difference?

We need volunteers, advocates, and all who are interested in supporting seniors. If you have design skills, medical expertise, or are interested in bringing us to your facility, we would love to hear from you.
