Why does ShoesOverSocks exist?

I founded ShoesOverSocks because seniors living with apraxia deserve support that protects both their dignity and independence. While volunteering at a local memory care community, I saw residents complete familiar dressing tasks in the wrong sequence, such as putting underwear over their pants or socks over their shoes. These experiences showed me that a person may understand the goal of an activity yet still struggle to organize and complete its steps in the correct order.

Rather than immediately completing the task for someone, we can provide appropriate guidance that helps them participate as independently as possible. ShoesOverSocks promotes this empowerment through step-by-step visual instructions, verbal guidance, and tangible cues designed to support daily routines, preserve autonomy, and reduce frustration and withdrawal.

Ready to make a difference?

We need volunteers, advocates, and all who are interested in supporting seniors. If you have design skills, medical expertise, or are interested in bringing us to your facility, we would love to hear from you.
